The revision of the first variant lead to a second, which adopts a passive locking mechanism for the bamboo face-plate that is less reliant on the smartphone to hold the case together. The new design is comprised of two bamboo face plates, each approximately 1mm thick, which are laminated together with their grains crossing at a 90 degree angle. In having two plates (rather than one) the strength of the case should be improved, especially with their grains crossed. Furthermore the new face-plate design allows the bamboo to become flush with the edges of the PLA plastic frame, thus improving the aesthetics and feel of the case.'
In addition to the redesigned face-plate, the new design removes the need for the hand strap to be secured by velcro dots, instead it uses two metal pins to lock the strap to the plastic frame (bumper). The strap itself is redesigned to use flat nylon webbing rather than elastic band, this change results in a stronger strap with a softer feel. The revised design (or second variant), cuts down on use of plastic and synthetic materials, reduces the overall manufacturing costs, and lastly provides the user with a more stable/stronger product that should last longer.

Iphone 5/5s - Official Dimensional Drawing
The above diagram shows the dimensions of the iPhone 5 and 5s models produced by apple. This dimensional drawing has been followed closely when designing our case for the iPhone (5/5s). One important aspect which we considered was the recommended keepout of materials surrounding the camera and flash, avoiding materials around the camera prevents colour distortion when taking photos. Please refer to the diagram above for more details on recommended guidelines.
